Intro to Design Innovation

Description:
This project-based cross-disciplinary course is open to students from any major. This course blends analytical skills, intuition and creative thinking to develop practical solutions to real world problems; you will gain a high-level understanding of the design process through team-based projects tackling challenges. Design thinking, methods and strategies offer novel ways to discover market opportunities, experiment to validate concepts and mitigate risk, and deliver value to all. This will be a reflective project-based course that addresses the programmatic, technical, business, social and human factors of design in a way that leads to innovation(s) in the development of integrated solutions.
Course Learning Outcomes:
Collaboration-based outcomes
- Learning to collaborate, listen / work effectively with others
- Assembling cross-disciplinary teams to develop robust solutions and to practice ideation, discussion and engagement techniques with experts from totally different disciplines
- Learning to give and respond to critique
Design-based outcomes
- Demonstrating the ability to use tools and resources for prototyping and other DI-associated activities
- Learning to speculate / take risks / fail / reflect / learn and repeat
- Developing an ability to think laterally, identify and reframe complex problems
- Implement design thinking principles that foster deep insights by using observations, limiting judgment, and seeking balance in order to build a multidisciplinary perspective
