Jackie Ridley, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor of Early Childhood and Literacy Education in the School of Teaching, Learning and Curriculum Studies. She researches the language and literacy practices of young refugee and immigrant-background youth, an interest born from her experience as an elementary English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher in Northeast Ohio and overseas in Thai-Burmese refugee camps. As a teacher educator and a classroom researcher, Jackie is committed to preparing all educators to be effective in today’s increasingly multilingual classrooms. Outside of academia, Jackie is involved in local and national advocacy efforts to support students learning English as an additional language and presents at professional development workshops, teacher in-service trainings, and academic conferences on best practices for supporting multilingual students.

Giulia Diaz Boriello

Giulia Borriello

Giulia Borriello, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor in Learning Sciences and Educational Psychology whose work integrates perspectives, techniques, and methods across developmental and cognitive science, behavioral genetics, and education. Dr. Borriello’s research program aims to examine how: (1) an array of cognitive and math skills co-develop and interact with one another to influence learning, (2) family-level factors influence cognitive and math skills, and (3) gene-environment transactions influence learning trajectories. To date, she has published 14 peer-reviewed articles in high-impact journals including in PNAS, Child DevelopmentChild Development Perspectives, and Developmental Science. Findings from her program aim to clarify the individual, risk, and protective factors that enable children to maximize their learning potential.
