Meet Monique Wingard, a 2023-2024 Graduate Dean's Award recipient. Monique is a doctoral student majoring in Communication and Information.
Please give a short overview of your research.
In the era of AI journalism, we face a turning point in information sharing. Social media's influence on communication and hate speech is central to my research. I explore the consequences of handing content control to machines and question if AI might amplify hate speech, highlighting the potential need for regulation.
What made you choose to pursue your graduate degree here at Kent State?
Kent State felt like the right choice for my graduate studies for so many reasons. First, Ohio is home, and having my loved ones nearby means the world to me, especially during intense academic times. Kent State College of Communication and Information immediately resonated with me due to my deep interest in communications and tech policy. Discovering all the opportunities, depth of knowledge, and esteemed faculty here made me feel like I'd found the right fit. Honestly, knowing I'd have the chance to work with Dr. Tara Conley, someone I admire so much in the field, made my decision final.
What do you enjoy most about attending Kent State for graduate school? and/or What do you anticipate taking advantage of at KSU?
I absolutely love being at KSU for graduate school. Not only is the campus gorgeous with great resources, but every day, I'm surrounded by vibrant students brimming with enthusiasm and fresh ideas. Their energy and spirit genuinely inspire me and remind me of when I was their age, eager to carve my own path. I am proud and excited to be part of this university community. I'm looking forward to participating in events like the "Three Minute Thesis Competition" and seeking guidance from "The Write Place." The regular professional development sessions offered by the Graduate College are also on my calendar. Being at KSU is truly a blessing.
What are your future goals?
My future goals include teaching policy and ethics at the collegiate level. I also aim to serve in state service, specifically advising on policies impacting our youth. Given that technology dominates their world, it's imperative we guide it responsibly.
What does this award mean to you and how will it aid you?
Receiving this award is both a privilege and a call to action. It signifies the opportunity I have to learn from the best. I'm truly grateful for this recognition, and I feel a deep sense of duty to excel as a scholar, researcher, and educator. This award will empower me to dedicate my full attention to shaping my future, ensuring I can fulfill the mission I've set for myself.
