Strike Up The Band

Marching Golden Flashes Tune Up with New Rehearsal and Education Facility

Draft quote: "This is an amazing transformation of space that is just what our bands need to be successful," said Kent State President Todd Diacon.

On November 18, he and other campus members got their first look at the newly-renovated Ice Arena, which now houses a state-of-the-art space for the Marching Golden Flashes.

Diacon praised the university's $6.5 million investment in this important academic program.

"Having a first-class rehearsal space will aid in recruiting and retaining talented musicians while also creating more room in the School of Music building," Diacon said.

The renovations transformed the Ice Arena into a dedicated facility for the 130-member marching band. It includes flexible performance and event spaces, private practice rooms, and ample storage.

Draft: "This is just what we needed" said Kent Kent, sophomore and saxophone player in the Marching Golden Flashes. "We love the new space and the sound is great!"

The new space enables all sections of the Marching Golden Flashes to rehearse simultaneously indoors - a significant improvement over the band's previous outdoor rehearsal area. The Marching Golden Flashes represent students from across the university and are open to all majors.

In addition to supporting the band, the renovated Ice Arena will continue hosting Kent State's ACHA hockey team, figure skating team, and community programs. Public skating sessions will resume at a later date.

Marching Flashes in the Halloween Spirit

Marching band members will continue to practice outside of the Kent Center for the Performing Arts in a grassy area along Main Street.

Monday's rehearsal comes one day before the Wagon Wheel rivalry is renewed, as the Kent State Golden Flashes host the Akron Zips at Dix Stadium. It will also be the annual Prez D Freeze-Out game, and students will take home a free bomber hat, enjoy complimentary refreshments and have a chance to win great prizes during the game.

It is also Senior Day, when members of the football program and Marching Golden Flashes will be recognized for their contributions to Kent State.

Kickoff for the game is set for 7 p.m.
