Quick Tip: Viewing Options in the Gradebook – Status and Cell Colors

POSTED: Mar. 26, 2025

There are times when your Gradebook might be a rainbow of colors and a variety of icons.  These indicators are meant to assist instructors in immediately identifying the status of assignments across their course.

Gradebook Colors

Let’s start with the colors you might see and what they mean.

Canvas Gradebook Status Colors
  • Blue (1): Late Submission
  • Red (2): Missing Submission
  • Green (3): Resubmitted Assignment or Quiz
  • Orange (4): Dropped Grade (see our Quick Tip on Weighted and Dropped Grades to revisit how to drop an assignment)
  • Yellow (5): Excused Assignment

Bonus Tip: Instructors can change or customize the status colors.  However, the status names cannot be changed.  To change the color, open the Settings tray (1), expand the View Options tab (2), locate the Status Color desired, click the Edit icon (3), and select your chosen color. Be sure to click both the Apply button (4) and the Apply Settings button (5) to save your changes.

  • Number (2): Points Grade
  • Check Icon (3): Complete Grade
  • X Icon (4): Incomplete Grade
  • Letter (5): Letter Grade

Visibility Icons

If you have applied a manual posting policy in a course or for an individual assignment, the MANUAL label (1) will display in the column header cell for that assignment.

The Visibility icon (2) indicates that there are grades within the assignment that must be posted before they can be viewed by students.  A Visibility icon (3) will also appear in the Total column to indicate that the total grade seen by the Instructor differs from the total grade viewed by the student.

Turnitin Icons

When instructors enable Turnitin on an assignment, the Gradebook will display a colored label icon. To view details of the received score, click the icon and view more details in SpeedGrader.

  • Color Icon (2): The color is based on the percentage returned in the Similarity Report.
  • Clock icon: The Similarity Report is still being generated.
  • Exclamation icon: There was an error generating the Similarity Report.  Instructors should try running the report again and if the error persists, reach out for support.

Warning Icons

There are a few different warning icons that instructors should be aware of.

  • The Black Warning Icon (1) only appears in the total column and indicates that the final score does not include one specified assignment group. Click on the icon to see which assignment group is affected.
  • The Red Warning Icon (2) indicates that an entered grade is not supported in the grading scheme, or when an invalid grade is entered.
  • The Grade Detail Tray Warning Icon (3) reminds instructors if the setting “Do not count this assignment toward the final grade” option is selected in the assignment settings.
