Text-Only Version of Plagiarism Flowchart

Administrative Policy for Student Cheating and Plagiarism 3-01.8

The instructor determines that an act of cheating or plagiarism has occurred.

The instructor notifies the student and sets up a meeting. The student provides an explanation at the meeting with the instructor, and the instructor decides if there is an academic violation.

If the instructor decides that there is not an academic violation, the process is complete. If the instructor decides that there is an academic violation, the instructor then considers sanctions and options.

Instructor Sanctions and Options

  1. The instructor and student agree to Plagiarism School
  2. The instructor assigns Coursework Sanctions
  3. The instructor recommends Other and/or Degree Sanctions
  4. The instructor refers to an Academic Hearing Panel (go to Academic Hearing Panel)

If the instructor chooses one of the first three sanctions or options, then the Office of Student Conduct receives an online Cheating/Plagiarism Sanction Form and enters the instructor information into the Advocate database. The Office of Student Conduct determines if there have been prior academic violations.

If there were prior academic violations, an Academic Hearing Panel is convened (go to Academic Hearing Panel). If there were not prior academic violations, the Office of Student Conduct provides the Chair or Dean with the instructor's findings, recommendations and due date for review.

The Chair or Dean then decides if:

  1. Coursework Sanctions will suffice (go to Coursework Sanctions)
  2. Other Sanctions should be considered, and the Chair or Dean informs the Office of Student Conduct to facilitate an Academic Hearing Panel (go to Academic Hearing Panel)
  3. Degree Sanctions are applicable (go to Degree Sanctions)

Coursework Sanctions

The Chair or Dean decides that Coursework Sanctions will suffice, and the Chair or Dean informs the Office of Student Conduct of final sanctions, pending an appeal process.

The Office of Student Conduct provides an Academic Cheating/Plagiarism Form, with appeal information, to the student (copies sent to the Chair or Dean and instructor).

The student may choose to submit an appeal.

If the student does not submit an appeal, the process is complete. If the student does submit an appeal, an Academic Hearing Panel is convened (go to Academic Hearing Panel).

Academic Hearing Panel

An Academic Hearing Panel is facilitated and convened by the Office of Student Conduct. The panel determines if the student was responsible for the violation(s).

If the student is not found responsible for the violation(s), the process is complete. If the student is found responsible for the violation(s), the Academic Hearing Panel Chair writes and sends the decision to the student (copies sent to the instructor and Office of Student Conduct). The Academic Hearing Panel Chair or Dean will decide if Degree Sanctions are applicable (go to Degree Sanctions).

The Student, Faculty, or Dean may choose to submit an appeal.

If an appeal is not submitted, the process is complete. If an appeal is submitted, the appeal is moved to the Provost.

The Provost writes and sends the decision to the student (copies sent to the Chair or Dean, instructor and Office of Student Conduct), and the process is complete.

Degree Sanctions

The Academic Hearing Panel Chair or Dean decide that Degree Sanctions are applicable, and the Dean decides to either:

  1. Apply D.1.b.i or D.1.b.ii sanctions
  2. Recommend D.1.b.iii sanctions
D.1.b.i or D.1.b.ii Sanctions

If the Dean decides to apply D.1.b.i or D.1.b.ii sanctions, the Dean informs the Office of Student Conduct of final sanctions, pending an appeal process.

The student may choose to submit an appeal.

If the student does not submit an appeal, the process is complete. If the student does submit an appeal, the appeal is moved to the Provost.

The Provost writes and sends the decision to the student (copies sent to the Chair or Dean, instructor and Office of Student Conduct), and the process is complete.

D.1.b.iii Sanctions

If the Dean recommends D.1.b.iii sanctions, the process is moved to the Provost, President, or Board of Trustees.
