Kent State University will officially introduce its new head football coach Thursday, Dec. 21, at 1 p.m. at the Integrated Sciences Building.
Kent State University President Emerita Carol Cartwright, Ph.D., and her husband, G. Phillip Cartwright, Ph.D., have made a $1 million estate gift that will create scholarships at Kent State to support students who wish to engage in the arts. The Cartwright Family Fund for Opportunities in the Arts is an unrestricted endowment that will enable underrepresented populations to participate in arts education who might not otherwise be able to do so.
Kent State University held its Fall Commencement ceremonies for the Kent Campus on Friday, Dec. 15, and Saturday, Dec. 16, at the Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center (MAC Center). Kent State conferred 2,320 degrees, including 1,824 bachelor’s degrees, 456 master’s degrees, 37 doctoral degrees and three educational specialist degrees.
Across the university’s eight-campus system, 2,981 students graduated from Kent State this fall, including those receiving associate degrees.
Kent State University Libraries will once again offer its Stress-Free Zone to all students, faculty and staff on Monday, Dec. 11, and Tuesday, Dec. 12, from 3-5 p.m. in the Garden Room at the University Library. This event gives the Kent State community a chance to wind down during finals week with snacks, games and the ®.
Earl K. Miller, Ph.D., and his wife, Marlene M. Wicherski, have pledged $2 million to fund three scholarships and a professorship in Kent State University’s College of Arts and Sciences. Dr. Miller is a Kent State alumnus who grew up in Lyndhurst, Ohio.

Supporters give more than $1 million
Kent State University’s Giving Tuesday 2017 doubled the 2016 campaign – hitting more than $1 million just before midnight on Tuesday, Nov. 28. The single largest gift of the day was a $100,000 donation to the Fashion School Study Away Fund. From multiple student study abroad scholarships to research opportunities and poetry programs, there were more than 40 featured giving options across the Kent State system from which to choose.
Officers from Kent State University Police Services have always had a “protect and serve” philosophy, and recently, they put this philosophy in action in order to help families in need.
Each year, the department holds a “Glow, Grow and Give” fundraiser throughout the month of November to raise money for a worthy cause. The staff members can donate $30, and in return, they may grow out beards (for men), dye their hair pink or blue or paint their fingernails.
Kent State University kicked off the season of giving early this year on Nov. 1 with the launch of its 2017 Giving Tuesday campaign. In a departure from efforts of past years, the university extended the fundraising initiative through the entire month of November, leading up to Giving Tuesday, the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, on Nov. 28. Giving Tuesday is the unofficial worldwide beginning to a season of philanthropic giving to nonprofits that follows Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
The Kent State University men’s basketball team had a successful home opener, Thursday, Nov. 16, in the Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center (MAC Center). The Golden Flashes defeated the Ohio Christian University Trailblazers, 90-45.
