During the weekend before Veterans Day, Hero's Ruck - Linking Pets to Vets and Kent American Legion Post 496 presented the Ruck for Pets and Vets to benefit and assist in the acquisition of companion animals from the Portage Animal Protection League for veterans and first responders.
A "ruck march" is a organized walk by people each carrying a heavy "ruck" (backpack) to honor military veterans. Participants and their companion animals were encouraged to pack their rucks with items like dog bones, cat toys or pet food for the Animal Protective League. The march began in downtown Kent and used the Lester A. Lefton Esplanade to walk through the Kent State University campus all the way to Dix Stadium.
